Now that the school year is ending, the summer traveling season has started and just like in past years, various tourist locations in Wyoming are trying to get a good piece of the financial pie that comes with it.

The Wyoming Office of Tourism recently released its Wyoming Economic Impact of Travel Analysis for 2024.

Among the highlights, the Office says the state welcomed 8.7 million visitors last year.

That resulted in a direct travel spending increase of 1.6% or $75.8 million and that travel spending has grown at an average annual rate of 3.9% over the course of the past 10 years.

About 75% of direct visitor spending was generated by out of state and international visitors, while the rest came from in-state.

This led to a $7.6 million increase in state tax revenue ($163.8 million in 2024) and a $3.9 million increase in local tax revenue ($113.4 million).

About 440 jobs were created from travel spending, which is a 1.3% increase.

Sheridan County collected about $3.8 million in direct tax revenue last year, which is up 4.9% from the previous year, while Johnson County collected about $1.2 million, which is up 13.7%.

When the value of the dollar is less than the previous year, of course there is more spending. These numbers look good on paper, until you calculate them with inflation. What the article doesn’t mention, but the report does, there was about 35,000 less hotel stays in 2024 vs 2023.
