Large Crowd at District #1 Board Meeting

Sheridan County School District #1 held their monthly board meeting at Big Horn High School on May 11 at 6 pm. with a large crowd in attendance.

Angel Sparkman Cowboy State Virtual Academy director, gave a slide show on the CSVA. “We have virtually the best school in Wyoming,” Sparkman said, adding that there were 224 students enrolled in the school.

Chairman Carol Garber asked if the CSVA is going to be enlarged, and Sparkman said they are hoping for 250 student. She said that some of the students work, and attend the Academy part-time. At present 25% are K-5, 82% middle school and 43% high school. School is year around, and students can enroll at any time, Sparkman said. She introduced nearly 20 teachers who attended the meeting and who teach at the CSVA. Interested parties can go to the Facebook page to learn more about the CSVA program.

Colby Lynch, Tongue River High School principal talked about the Bridge School, which offers more flexibly and options for students than just the brick and mortar schools or virtual schools. He said that two TRHS seniors are now working had to get their high school diplomas through the bridge school.

Activities directors Mike Daley from Big Horn, and Steve Hanson, from Tongue River, recognized the coaching staffs, fans and custodial staff for their dedication during the pandemic. Daley said, “The coach’s modeled every behavior we expected out of our kids,” He also thanked the parents and fans, “our parents and fans are phenomenal,” he said.

“Over 85% of students are enrolled in some activities, and there is a direct correlation between activities and academic achievement.”

Steve Hanson said “We didn’t’ know what kind of season we would have, and a big thank you to all coaches and activity sponsors.

Richard Welch, assistant BHMS principal, spoke briefly about his upcoming retirement. He has been a part of District #1 School system for 31 years.

Superintendent Kilbride said the four day school week has been approved for Bighorn.

Sydnee Pitman, Tongue River student representative, reported on a successful prom last week, and commented that there were only 10 more days of school left for seniors. She also mentioned that a mounted lifesize Big Horn Sheep Ram was going to be donated to BHS and would be there later in the year.

Trustee Clint Krumm presented two framed awards to the student representatives, Sydee Pitman and Cassie Guelde, for their outstanding service as student representatives to the board.
