Vanna L. Schwamb passed away Thursday, October 24th, at Westview Health Care Center, where she had been a resident the past three months, at the age of 97.
Vanna was born on November 16th, 1926, in Miles City, Monana to parents Georgia (Tilleson) Harris and Marion Miller Harris. Vanna grew up and attended school in Rosebud, Montana. At that time, it was a thriving little town and a wonderful place to grow up, with a good school providing a solid basic education. After graduation, she attended college in Bozeman, Montana and laboratory and X-ray school in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She moved to Sheridan, Wyoming and started working at the “old” Memorial Hospital as a lab and X-ray technician in Jan 1947. This is where she met her future husband, Lyndon Schwamb.
Lyndon and Vanna began their life together in 1948, marrying in Miles City. They lived in his parents’ home on Big Horn Avenue for about a year, before moving to a ranch on the Clear Creek, about three miles from Clearmont. They raised Angus cattle, hay, and grain. In the summer of 1953, they bought a ranch on the East Rosebud Creek along the Beartooth Mountains in Montana. They raised sheep, Angus cattle, hay and grain. They moved to Billings in 1957 residing there until they moved back to Wyoming, settling in the Big Horn area in 1958. Vanna worked as a lab technician through the years for Dr. Thickman until retirement. They moved to Sheridan in 1991.
Vanna was an avid reader, which allowed her to be knowledgeable in most anything. She was sharp as a wit and loved a good debate. She enjoyed her flowers and vegetable garden, genealogy, dancing, horseback riding and after retirement, became an accomplished watercolor artist. She loved her friends at water exercise and bowling. She loved animals, particularly her cats.
Vanna was very proud of her heritage, being granted membership as a Northern Cheyenne in 2010. She was very fond of the relatives and friends she was able to reconnect with, keeping in contact with many.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Survivors include her two sons Curtis (Linda), and Douglas; grandchildren Jennifer, Vista, and Shawn; two great-grandchildren Darian and Kelcy.
Cremation has taken place, and no services are planned at this time. Memorials may be made to Second Chance Cat Rescue, 1850 Gabrielle Ct, Sheridan. WY 82801, where her beloved cat Silky resides. Arrangements are under the care of Sheridan Funeral Home. Online condolences may be made to www.sheridanfuneral.com
