Tongue River and Sheridan HS Basketball: The Wyoming High School Basketball post-season is in full swing in both Sheridan and in Casper.
Tongue River plays in 2 of the first 3 games today at Casper College in the 2A State Tournament.
The girls go first at 10:30am against Rocky Mountain and immediately following that at about 12-noon, the boys take on Big Piney.
You can hear both of those games LIVE on Fox Sports 106.3 FM.
It’s been 30 years since the TR boys won the school’s one and only state basketball championship, and it’s been 10 years since the girls last brought home a state title.
Meanwhile, later today the Sheridan Broncs and Lady Broncs will begin their quest to qualify for next weekend’s 4A State Tournament.
Sheridan hosts the 4A East Regional Tournament, as all 8 teams from the East will play it out to see which 4 boys teams and which 4 girls teams, will get to continue their season for one more weekend.
Action starts as early as 9am.
The Lady Broncs will play much later in the day as they don’t start their first round game against Laramie until 5pm, which will be the last girls game of the day.
Sheridan won at home against the Lady Plainsmen about 3 weeks ago.
Coach Ryan Sullivan says he would not be surprised if Laramie tried something new the second time around, and added he’s confident that if they do, the Lady Broncs will be able to handle it.
Following the girls game at about 6:30pm, the Sheridan Broncs will take to the court for their first round game against winless Cheyenne South.
It was this time last year when the boys were in a pretty good spot and then all of sudden, the wheels came off the wagon, and the team ended getting eliminated after 2 games in the regional tournament.
Coach Jeff Martini says that’s in the past, those who played last year and are playing again this year learned their lessons and the Broncs are in a much better spot.
You can hear both Sheridan games LIVE on AM 1410 KWYO and 106.9 FM.
Sheridan County HS Indoor Track and Field: The State Meet starts tomorrow at 10:30am at Gillette and at 9am on Saturday.
Sheridan, Tongue River and Big Horn will all be participating.
The Lady Broncs are the defending 4A State Champs and Broncs placed 3rd last year.
Sheridan Hawks Hockey: The Sheridan Hawks face off tomorrow and Saturday in their regular season and home finale, against a Cody team that is still winless after 45 games.
The puck drops both nights at 7:30pm.
The Hawks need more than just 2 wins, they also need Gillette to beat Rapid City twice in regulation and for Butte to do the same against Great Falls.
If all that happens, there would be a 3-way tie for the final playoff spot and then we’ll have to see what the tie-breaker rules say.
University of Wyoming Basketball: The Wyoming Cowgirls broke out of their 4-game slump last night by winning on the road against San Jose State, 88-73.
In the game, the team set season-highs for most points in a quarter with 28 and most points in 1-half with 51.
The Cowgirls shot 61% for the game, including a perfect 10-for-10 in the 2nd quarter, and that also includes shooting 60% from 3 point land and they hit 15 out of 25 shots from behind the arc.
Tess Barnes led the way for the ladies with 21 points, which included 5 3’s.
Malene Pedersen added in 14, and Allyson Fertig had a double-double…13 points and 10 rebounds.
UW is now 15-12 overall on the season and have a 10-6 record in the Mountain West Conference, with 2 games remaining in the regular season.
The Cowgirls play in their home finale on Saturday vs. Fresno State.
Tip-off is scheduled for 1pm.
Meanwhile, the Wyoming Cowboys play round 2 of the Border War on Saturday at Colorado State, beginning at 2pm.
Colorado Rockies Pre-Season Baseball: The Colorado Rockies won yesterday at home against the LA Angels 3-1.
The team next plays this afternoon at the Chicago Cubs, beginning at 1:05pm.
Denver Nuggets Basketball: Last night the Denver Nuggets won at home against Sacramento 117-96.
The Nuggets play again tonight at home vs. Miami.
