Sheridan Legion Baseball Board Meets With Public Regarding Dismissal Of Coach Austin Cowen

The Sheridan Legion Baseball Board is trying to be cautious about its next move, when it comes to who will coach the Troopers.

Earlier this month, the Board unanimously relieved Austin Cowen of coaching duties.

While addressing and listening to a group of about 100 people on Monday (September 22nd), including current and former players, parents and other coaches, board members said they’re not in league to discuss the reasons behind the dismissal, similar to how a business doesn’t have to explain why an employee was fired.

Members of the crowd fired back saying the board’s by-laws are out of date.

In a phone interview with Sheridan Media, Cowen said he was not at the meeting when the vote took place and was blindsided when he found out.

He adds he’s been humbled with the recent outpouring of support, but did not give a definitive answer on if he would come back, should the board reverse course.

“Coaching to me at the end of the day to me is all about building those relationships with your guys. Going to bat for them, helping them through their times and this time around, they’re coming to bat and having my back is pretty special and I have all the faith in the world, no matter what happens I’ve given it everything I can. I don’t regret a thing that I’ve done within this tenure and I am excited for our group of guys. I’m very excited for what we’ve been building here. I am confident that if my players want to play for me that I’ll find a way to do that for them.”

Board members say no official decision has been made as to who the new Head Coach for the Troopers will be.

Cowen has been the Troopers Head Coach for the past 3 years and the team finished this year as Wyoming AA State Runners-Up.

Before that, Cowen coached the Sheridan Jets and led them to the Wyoming A-League State Championship in 2019 and 2021.
