Sheridan HS Boys Wrestlers 2nd; Girls 3rd At State Meet: The Wyoming High School Wrestling Season has concluded and Sheridan wrestlers brought home 5 individual state championships and 2 team trophies.
The Sheridan boys were state runners-up, and the girls were 3rd for the 2nd year in a row.
For the boys, three out of 5 Broncs won state championships in their respective weight classes.
Those 3 were Cody Dunham at 120 pounds, Nahir Aguirre at 175 pounds, and Dane Steel at 165 pounds.
Steel is now a 3-time champ and went undefeated this season.
He says he knew his opponent in the championship match wasn’t going to make things easy, because the opponent had only lost 1 match all season coming in.
The senior adds he just had to wait things out and his patience eventually paid off.
Steel would eventually win the championship match by a score of 15-3.
On the girls side, Paityn Covolo won the 135 pound state championship, and Becca Oetken would win her 2nd state title, this time at 190 pounds.
We’ll hear more from the wrestling state champs later this week.
Sheridan HS At Nordic Ski State Meet: The Nordic Skiing State Championship took place on top of Casper Mountain.
Sheridan improved from last year’s finish as the boys placed 5th and the girls were 6th this year.
Sheridan HS Basketball: It went down to the wire on Friday, but Connor Bateson hit a 3 with 27 seconds to go and the defense would hold, as the Sheridan Broncs would win at home vs. Natrona 53-51 to secure the #1 seed out of the northeast for this weekend’s 4A East Regional Tournament.
The Sheridan Lady Broncs easily took care of business against Natrona 65-36.
Sheridan will host the 4A East Regional Tournament this coming Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Action starts as early as 9am.
The Lady Broncs and the Broncs will play in back-to-back games later in the day.
At 5pm, the girls will take on Laramie and at 6:30pm the boys play Cheyenne South.
Tongue River HS Basketball: The Tongue River boys and girls will represent at the 2A State Tournament in Casper beginning this coming Thursday.
The Lady Eagles defeated Lingle-Ft. Laramie this past Saturday to win the 2A East Regional Tournament and claim the #1 seed out of the East.
The Eagles lost to Wright in their regional championship game.

Big Horn and Arvada-Clearmont HS Basketball: The Big Horn boys and girls, and the Arvada-Clearmont girls, did not survive a do-or-die game back on Saturday, and their respective seasons have ended.
Sheridan County HS Indoor Track and Field: The state meet is this Friday and Saturday at Gillette.
The Sheridan girls are the defending state champs and the boys placed 3rd last year.
Sheridan Hawks Hockey: The Sheridan Hawks snapped their 7-game losing streak by winning both games this past weekend at Butte.
Friday’s score was 5-4 as the Hawks would get the winning goal with 33 seconds to go.
Saturday’s score was 7-2.
Sheridan is still mathematically alive for the playoffs, but there’s no room for error and the team needs some help as well.
The Hawks conclude the regular season this coming Friday and Saturday at home vs. Cody, who after 45 games, are still winless.
The team also needs Great Falls and Rapid City to lose both of their games this weekend, and if all that happens, that would create a 3-way tie for the final playoff spot and then the tie-breaking rules would have to be examined.
University of Wyoming Basketball: The defense for the Wyoming Cowboys was a no-show this past Saturday as the team got clobbered at home vs. Boise State 92-72.
The Pokes shot 50% for the game, but the Broncos shot 54%, mostly because they took more shots.
Sam Griffin led UW with 16 points, Mason Walters put in 15 and Kael Combs came off the bench to add in 12.
The Cowboys are now 13-14 on the season and have a 6-8 record in the Mountain West Conference.
The next game for the Brown and Gold is tomorrow at home vs. UNLV.
As for the Wyoming Cowgirls, they dropped their 4th straight game back on Saturday and this one stung a little bit as they lost 59-58 at home vs. New Mexico.
The big difference was that the Lady Lobos hit 11 3’s in the game.
Three Cowgirls scored in double figures.
Malene Pedersen had 16, Emily Mellema put in 11 and Allyson Fertig contributed with 10.
UW is now 14-12 on the season and have a 9-6 record in the conference.
The team plays again Wednesday at San Jose State.
