YMCA talks camps and Itty Bitty Soccer

Summer camps are great for kids. A 2005 study of 80 camps by the American Camp Association (ACA) found significant growth in children’s social-emotional skills after a session of summer camp. Camp staff, parents, and children reported increases in children’s self-esteem, independence, leadership, friendship skills, social comfort, and values and decision-making skills, from the beginning to the end of a session.

According to a study performed by Harvard University’s School of Education, summer camps introduce children to an entirely new group of peers. It sets up opportunities for children to find their own friends. Creating a space where silliness is accepted, and bullying is not. It also gives children a break from technology and social media.

The Sheridan County YMCA offers many summer camp opportunities and although summer is in full swelter, there are still plenty of slots open. A list of camps with openings available as well as registration forms can be found by clicking here. Scholarships are available for families and are handled with discretion.

Along with summer camps, Itty Bitty Soccer sign-ups have opened at the Y.

This introductory level activity is for children ages 3.5 – 5 years old. YMCA Executive Director Liz Cassiday told listeners of Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse about the program.

Scholarships are available for sporting activities as well. For many children who might be suffering from apprehension, Cassiday said a new piece of equipment goes a long way in building confidence.
