Classic Western Film Series: Films that Stay With You
The Classic Western Film Series will return to Sheridan with a lineup of classic western films hosted by regional storytellers and special guests, celebrating the legacy and cultural impact of the western genre.
The series will take place at the WYO Theater and will feature multiple public screenings, each paired with a live host providing historical context, commentary, and audience engagement.
This year’s lineup begins Jan. 4 with Along Came Jones, starring Gary Cooper and hosted by Buck Brannaman. The series continues Jan. 11 with the comedy Destry Rides Again, starring Jimmy Stewart and Marlene Dietrich and hosted by Craig Johnson. On Jan. 18, Bob Grammens will host There Was a Crooked Man, starring Kirk Douglas and Henry Fonda, and the series concludes Jan. 25 with Cowboy, starring Jack Lemmon and Glenn Ford and hosted by Tommy B.
Co-founded in 2009 and since steered by Gene Sturlin, the Classic Western Film Series was created to preserve and showcase western films in a theatrical setting while connecting modern audiences with the storytelling traditions of the American West.
During an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse, Sturlin said he watches hundreds of western films each year to find selections that audiences will remember long after the ending, noting that the most memorable films often hinge on surprising character types rather than traditional heroes.

Sturlin said the event continues to highlight the genre’s lasting relevance and its deep ties to Wyoming’s history, landscape, and identity.
A handmade fixed-blade knife crafted by Sturlin will again be raffled off for charity, with the drawing held at the conclusion of the series. Patrons who purchase tickets to all four films will receive one free raffle entry.
