The Advocacy and Resource Center and WyoGives
The Advocacy & Resource Center of Sheridan assists victims of violent crimes, providing victims with the tools they need to not only survive, but thrive.
Too many times, those that are in need of help have been forced from their homes in desperation. Some escape to save their lives and the lives of their children.
Executive Director of the Advocacy & Resource Center Yvonne Swanson said that often in domestic abuse situations, the abuser has control of finances and means of communication. When a victim is forced to escape the situation, they often have little to nothing but the clothes on their back. Swanson has even helped a victim who seized an opportunity to get away from their abuser but had to leave their shoes behind.
But that is why Swanson and her team at the Advocacy Center are here, to be the light at the end of a long tunnel. Abusers often control every aspect of their victim’s life. To escape the situation entirely takes time, emotional and physical healing and help.
The center relies on federal funding and grants, a revenue source that is often one of the first streams cut when the budgets get tight. The center also relies heavily on donations. During an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse, Swanson told listeners that donations of clothes are appreciated but there’s little room to store them long term.
For the third year, The Advocacy and Resource Center is taking part in WyoGives.
WyoGives – an initiative of the Wyoming Nonprofit Network — is a statewide 24-hour online fundraising event designed to bring the state together as one community in fellowship to raise money and awareness for Wyoming’s nonprofits.
On July 13, the WyoGives website will accept donations for hundreds of Wyoming nonprofits for just 24 hours. The center is benefiting from generous hearts that wish to increase those donations.
Funds raised will allow the center to continue helping victims and operating educational programs designed to teach children the signs of healthy and abusive relationships.
