Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter Dog Lead Marcie Horsely and Cat Lead Sue Johnson made an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse to discuss a successful summer of vaccinations.

Every summer season the Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter offer Vaccination Clinics that offer the public an opportunity to get their pets inoculated at a reduced rate, offering a rabies vaccine along with parvovirus and distemper at $15 a piece.

The shelter has included an optional free examination. This examination could not diagnose or treat ailments but was found useful to make pet owners aware of a possible problem, according to Horsely.

Due to the addition of the free examination, the clinics moved to a scheduled format. According to Johnson, that schedule was booked full at each clinic and Horsely said the majority of visitors chose to take advantage of the free examinations.

In May of this year, Sheridan County Public Health released a rabies advisory as many skunks in the area were turning up with the disease. Johnson said this year, luckily, she did not see cases of rabies in cats coming into the shelter. Unfortunately, she did see a lot of parvovirus.

Vaccination clinics at the shelter have closed for the year but will begin again in the Spring.
