Bull Rider Wyatt Phelps Of Sheridan College Preparing For 2023 CNFR

The 2023 College National Finals Rodeo starts this Sunday (June 11th) at the Ford Wyoming Center in Casper.

Sheridan College will have 3 cowboys who will try to win a championship belt buckle and saddle.

Clancy Glenn and Joseph Priebe will compete in the saddle bronc event, while Wyatt Phelps will try to be the college national champ in bull riding.

For Phelps, he says he’s been riding bulls since his freshman year in high school at Pinedale.

He’s been to the High School NFR 3 times, but this will be the first time in 3 tries that he’ll be on the college stage.

Phelps adds when it comes to bulls, someone else might know a thing or 2 about how a bull might move and spin during the 8 second ride, but he doesn’t always rely on that information, because it’s not always right.

“I just train really hard throughout the week, trying to get on a bunch and then I guess when it comes down to it, I guess I just try to shut my mind off and let my body take over, try not to think about it too much. You know they’re wild animals, so they can change it up anytime they want, so I just try to take it one jump at a time, and keep searching for the middle.”

All competitors in every event at the CNFR are guaranteed 3 runs in their event and then the top 12 total on 3 after next Friday night (June 16th), will be invited back to the championship short-go on Saturday.

Phelps is scheduled to ride this coming Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, and then he’ll have to wait out the rest of the week to see if he is invited back for the finals.
