Summer Brings More Motorcycles to the Road
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2024, nationally 6,228 motorcyclists were killed, 16% of all traffic fatalities. The Safety Administration’s data shows this is one of the highest number of motorcyclists killed since 1975. Of the motorcycle operators involved in fatal crashes in 2024, 35% were riding without valid motorcycle licenses.
Wyoming Highway Patrol Lieutenant Louis Tegdesch and Captain Erik Jorgensen made an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse to discuss motorcycle safety.
With the onset of the summer season, more riders are pulling onto the streets, highways and Interstate. The WHP is asking everyone to “look twice and save a life.” The popular slogan urges drivers to make a conscious effort to double-check glance into their blind spots and at intersections before merging or turning onto roads.
The WHP Captain also urges motorists following motorcycles to ensure they are creating enough room between themselves and the motorcycle in the event of an emergency.

Tegdesch reminded riders to operate their motorcycle defensively, never assume other vehicles know where you are in relation to them. He also noted that helmets and other safety equipment has become more common among motorcycle riders.
