Ucross Founder’s Day recognizes the 104th birthday of the late Ucross founder, Raymond Plank. According to the Foundation, Plank was born on May 29, 1922, and grew up on a farm in Minnesota. Only a few months after enrolling into Yale, Plank left his schooling behind to enlist in the U.S. Army Air Corps Reserves after the attack on Pearl Harbor.  During his service in World War II, Plank piloted B-24 bombers. He completed 40 combat missions and earned numerous commendations. After the war, Plank went on to graduate from Yale and eventually co-found and became chairman and CEO of Apache Corporation. Plank passed away in November 2018 at age 96.

Ucross Foundation Communications Associate Emi Whiting appeared on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse inviting the public to the fifth annual Founder’s Day and to explore the artist residency grounds on Ucross’s 20,000-acre ranch and visit the artists in their studios.

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., visitors may tour the studios of Ucross’s current artists-in-residence, meet the artists, discuss their process of creation and view works in progress.

At 1 p.m., the Ucross Art Gallery will unveil the latest exhibition, In Company. Curated by Ucross, In Company explores how artists, composers, and writers build upon inspiration from the creative works of their peers, past and present, to create a diverse creative community. Whiting said those members of the public that attend Founder’s Day this year will get a unique peek into one artist’s process as she creates the final piece of the exhibit during the event.

Throughout this unique sneak peek into the creativity at Ucross, the pop-up Ucross Café food truck will offer homemade pizza, popsicles, and beverages for purchase throughout the day. Guests are encouraged to bring a picnic blanket. Ucross is requesting guests register to attend this free event that is open to everyone.
