If you’ve read the poem “Locksley Hall,” you’ve probably heard the phrase, “In the Spring a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love.”
Although Valentine’s Day was more than three months ago, those thoughts of love were recently delivered in song in the Sheridan area.
A quintet of singers from Tongue River High School, who call themselves the TR Valley Girls, delivered spring-time singing sunshine barbershop-style music-grams, for those who wanted a message of love delivered to their loved ones.
Originally the plan was to have all this done on Valentine’s Day, but ill-timed snowstorms postponed those plans, as well as several attempts to reschedule.
Janessa Blain is a music instructor at TRHS.
She says she has passed on what she’s learned about the barbershop style of singing and so far it’s gone over well with students.
“When I was actually in college, I was part of a singing Valentine’s group and we studied barbershop quartet and I was telling the girls about it and they thought that was pretty cool and so we dove into that and they’ve done a great job learning the style and being able to provide that to others I think has helped them with music performance as well.”
The Tongue River Valley girls delivered more than a dozen music-grams on Tuesday (May 30th) to recipients in the Dayton-Ranchester-Sheridan area.
Proceeds raised by their performances went towards the TR High School music program.
