Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation Commander Ryan Cox said the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation Officer Involved Shooting Team, supported by the Southwest DCI Enforcement Team, has been requested by the Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office to investigate an officer-involved shooting involving a Sweetwater County deputy on April 20, 2026.

Cox said in the early morning hours of April 20, 2026, agents responded to the Sweetwater Heights Apartment Complex to conduct an investigation into a shooting. The DCI State Crime Lab responded to assist in processing the scene. A male was reported to be injured. No law enforcement officers or bystanders were injured, and the names of the involved parties will not be released to the public by DCI.

It is standard practice in Wyoming for DCI to be summoned to conduct an objective and comprehensive investigation into officer-involved shootings and the circumstances surrounding the incident. The investigation will consist of, among other procedures, crime scene processing, physical evidence analysis, digital evidence analysis and interviews. All necessary resources will be furnished to the agents executing this investigation to ensure that the facts of the incident are gathered in a timely, accurate and thorough manner.

A detailed investigative report will be prepared, internally reviewed and subsequently submitted to the Sweetwater County Attorney for review and consideration of criminal charges.

Cox said DCI is continuing to speak with witnesses and has requested that residents in the area provide any available camera recordings of the incident.

The agency thanked the community for allowing personnel to thoroughly process the scene. Anyone with information is asked to contact DCI at 307-777-7181.
