District 1 trustees consider student ambassadors program

Trustees of Sheridan County School District 1 are considering a student ambassador program for the district.

District 1 Superintendent Pete Kilbride said Trustee Clint Krumm brought up the idea at the board’s meeting this week.

School District 1 maintains the high schools in Big Horn and Dayton. Kilbride said if trustees talk about the idea at their work session in October, a policy could be prepared and go through the required two readings by the end of this year, so the program could start in January.

In other matters, trustees were approached by a group of students from Tongue River Middle School who would like to create a veterans’ memorial outside the school.

Kilbride said there would be no expense to the school district, and the students just wanted to know if creating the memorial is an option. He said the memorial proposal will also go on the agenda for the trustees’ work session next month.

Kilbride also presented trustees with a COVID-19 pamphlet that’s been prepared by the district’s school nurses to provide information about the coronavirus.

Kilbride also updated trustees on enrollment in the district. He said just under 1,000 students are attending the schools in Big Horn, Dayton and Ranchester, and another 30 students are enrolled in the district but are learning online.

Kilbride said the online students have the option to resume attending the district’s brick-and-mortar schools at any time.
