Deadline approaching for Wyoming Property Relief Program
Property tax rates increased an average 16 percent throughout the Cowboy State this year. Wyoming residents, especially those on fixed incomes, have been forced to tighten their belts.
During the 2023 Legislative Session, many tax relief bills were proposed. But due to the manner in which the Wyoming Constitution is written, those bills could never gain traction.
Ultimately, Wyoming lawmakers began the process to change the state constitution, but that will take two years to complete.
During an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse program, Sheridan County Commissions Lonnie Wright and Allen Thompson wanted to remind residents of the upcoming deadline for the Wyoming Property Tax Refund Program, which will offer some relief to residents until the bill to change the constitution goes to the voters.
Due to the legislature broadening the requirements to apply the program, Thompson recommended residents look over the information and determine if they qualify. Many residents may believe they do not qualify for the program, but due to expanded exemptions and increased income caps, many more residents of Sheridan County are eligible to receive a refund.
Thompson said there has been interest in the program, with residents receiving assistance from the Sheridan County Treasurer’s Office.
Like most processes in the tax system, the application process can be somewhat confusing for the layman. Wright suggested seeking assistance from the staff of the Treasurer’s Office.
The deadline to apply for the Wyoming Tax Relief Program is Monday June 5, 2023. Find the portal by clicking here.
