cvannoyAccording to information received from Levi Drake, who has participated in the annual Lake De Smet Polar plunge for several years, the Lake DeSmet Polar Plunge will be held today, Jan. 1, at 1 p.m. Interested people should meet at the monument board ramp. The Polar Plunge on Lake DeSmet was canceled last year due to safety concerns.
On warm winters, when the lake is free of ice, the participates simply run into the water, but when the Lake is iced over, a hole is cut in the ice for the brave souls to take a dip in the icy water. One reason people give for doing the plunge is to cleanse themselves for the new year.
