Wyoming Abortion Law Heading To State Supreme Court

A Wyoming law banning abortion in most cases, that was blocked by a judge earlier this year, will be addressed by the State Supreme Court

The law banning abortion in most cases briefly took effect in late July, but Judge Melissa Owens of Teton County issued orders suspending the law while the lawsuit proceeds, finding the law would harm pregnant women and their doctors and that constitutional questions need to be answered.

The Wyoming law would ban abortion except in cases of rape or incest or to protect the mother’s life or health, not including psychological condition.

Those who violate the ban would be charged with a felony punishable by up to 14 years in prison.

Governor Mark Gordon, signed the ban into law in March.

The law was written to take effect if the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the Roe v. Wade decision, which happened in late June.

Four women, including two obstetricians, and two nonprofits, including a planned Casper women’s health care and abortion clinic that was firebombed in May, have sued to contest the law.

The plaintiffs say the bill violates a multitude of rights afforded to them in the state Constitution, including their right to privacy and the right to make their own health care decisions.

All life is sacred. And ought to have a decent chance to live fully. Let the choice to continue a pregnancy stay with the mother. Its a huge health decision and belongs to her . . . and whoever she chooses as advisors. No one says she can’t bear a baby, no one should tell her she must. Wyoming constitution supports her right to make her own choice. I hope the state supreme court makes the right decision.

reply to tom jones…I wouldn’t be surprised if the “far right” mentality of the supreme court most often realized here in Wyoming will render the decision you desire…a far “right” decision

All these messages are from men. A man can not have a baby and should have no say in what a woman needs to do medically with her own body. Men need to stay out of it, including the governer.
