Smoke from the Elk Fire has impacted air quality in Sheridan County, with the air quality index (AQI) reaching 286 on Thursday, classified as “very unhealthy,” according to AirNow.gov.

Health officials urge residents to take precautions, especially vulnerable groups like those with heart or lung conditions, older adults, children, and teens. These individuals are advised to avoid all outdoor activities. Others are encouraged to minimize strenuous outdoor activities, shorten time spent outdoors, and consider moving physical activities indoors or rescheduling them.

The Elk Fire, which continues to burn in surrounding areas, is responsible for the dense smoke impacting the region. The situation is expected to persist until the fire is brought under control, and weather conditions improve.

For updates on air quality, residents can visit AirNow.gov or contact local authorities.
