News ReleaseAs a result of the Elk Fire two primary resident homes were lost early this morning due to the high winds along with increased and unpredictable fire activity in the area of Horseshoe Subdivsion.
Firefighters were in the area throughout the night and early morning providing structure protection to those homes; during increased erratic fire behavior as the cold front passed early this morning, they had to evacuate the immediate area surrounding these structures.
While we regret the loss of property, the number one goal is always the safety of the public and the firefighters. The Sheridan County Sheriff’s office notified the land owners and they are currently coordinating, with the incident management team liaisons.
We’d like to thank the community for the outpouring of support they have shown to all who have been affected by this fire.
We encourage everyone to monitor the Sheridan County Facebook page and the Sheridan County website for the most up-to-date information.

Why did the forest service let this fire burn for so long after it started? Who made that decision?
