Despite some ups and down in various categories and grade levels for the 2021-22 school year vs. the school year before, recent results from the Wyoming Test of Proficiency and Progress (WYTOPP) for students that tested as proficient or advanced in 3rd through 10th graders, are above state average in almost every category in schools in Sheridan and Johnson County.
Students were tested in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math, while 4th, 8th, and 10th graders, had an additional test in science.
The Wyoming Department of Education says state-wide student proficiency rates for the 2021-22 school year decreased in English Language Arts (ELA) by 0.80%, increased in Math by 0.30%, and decreased in Science by 0.10% compared to the results for the 2020-21 school year.
All percentage numbers in this story are shown regardless of race, gender, income level, home or virtual schooled, etc…
The changes in percentages are changes in percentage points.
Sheridan County School District 2: All numbers in all tested categories were above the state average. Comparing numbers for the 2021-22 school year vs. the 2020-21 school year, the best overall improvement was at the 4th grade level (up between 4.5% to 7%), while the biggest overall decrease was at the 8th grade level (down between 6%-7%). Individually, 6th grade math had the biggest improvement (up about 12.5%), while 10th grade English language arts had the biggest decrease (down about 10%).
Sheridan County School District 1: All numbers in all tested categories were above the state average, except for 8th grade science (State average = 45.93%. SCSD1 average = 44.68%). Comparing numbers for the 2021-22 school year vs. the 2020-21 school year, the best overall improvement was at the 9th grade level (up between 0.25%-10%), while the biggest overall decrease was at the 8th grade level (down between 15%-20%). Individually, 4th grade math saw the biggest increase (up about 15%). All 3 categories in 8th grade (English-Language Arts, Math, Science) were down 15%, 17% and 20% respectively.
Sheridan County School District 3: It’s hard to tell what kind of a difference there is, because in some grades the tests were either not administered, or there was no one at a specific grade level to take the tests. Due to overall low enrollment numbers compared to other school districts, if 1 or 2 students show an increase or a decrease, that can have a large impact on percentage numbers up or down.
Johnson County School District: All numbers in all tested categories were above the state average except for 4 categories. Those categories were 3rd grade English Language Arts for the second year in a row (state average = 47.89%, JCSD average = 43.18%) 10th grade English Language Arts (state average = 51.57%, JCSD average = 43.27%), 10th grade math (state average = 41.58%, JCSD average = 30.69%) and 10th grade science (state average = 46.47%, JCSD average = 28.71%). The 10th grade numbers for the 2021-22 school year are down anywhere between 11.5%-23% vs. the 2020-21 school year. The 6th grade level showed the most improvement from the 2020-21 school year to the 2021-22 school year with English Language Arts up 11.5% and math up 17%.

Sheridan, where all the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and all the children are above average.
