As if the Yellowstone National Park region didn’t have enough problems with the flooding back in June, Mother Nature may not be done with that part of northwest Wyoming.
According to WYDOT, sometime Wednesday evening (August 24th) enough rain fell on one section US Highway 14-16-20 that it caused a landslide that blocked both lanes of travel.
The incident happened about 10 miles east of the east entrance to Yellowstone.
WYDOT spokesperson Cody Beers says most landslide, mudslide or rockslide activity in that area usually happens in the spring, during the snowmelt.
“These summer rain storms are somewhat unusual, but when you get as much rain in a short amount of time, you end up with some flooding and you end up with gravity taking over.”
Beers adds that it took maintenance crews about 5 hours to clear and reopen the road.
No injuries were reported.
