Sheridan HS Nordic Ski Team Will Complete First Season As A Varsity Team

Friday and Saturday (February 24th and 25th) is the state Nordic ski meet in Jackson, and while this may not be the first time that Sheridan High School skiers have competed at this meet, it will be the first time under the Sheridan Bronc banner.
This winter is the first time that Sheridan has had a varsity nordic ski team.
In the past, Sheridan had skiers, but because there was no official team, they competed as a part of the team out of either Laramie or Cody.
The team does not yet have an official course, which is why they were the only team this season that did not host a meet.
As for where Sheridan practices at, Sophomore Justin McDowell says the team has received some help from some ski fans in the area.
“We’ve had some really awesome volunteers do some grooming for us, just wherever there’s available snow here at South Park or we have a place up in Story that someone is letting us use their property.”
Freshman Kayley Alicke says since this is the first year for the team, the best thing for each skier to do is set some reasonable goals.
“This year it’s probably not going to happen. I’m not going to be able to all-state this year, but I’m going to try and get a top 10 spot in state skiing, because I’ve gotten 5th place and 4th place so far in these last 2 races, so I’m going to shoot for a top 10 spot, but if not then it’s ok, but I’ll try. We have many athletes who are trying to get their last lettering point by getting in the top 50 percent against the field and so there’s a couple of girls and quite a few guys who have their last opportunity, at this last competition and so they’re going to shoot for that.”
As far as the competition at the state meet goes, the Jackson boys have won the last 4 state titles and 17 of the last 19, while the Jackson girls are attempting to 12-peat as state champs.
