College Rodeo: It’s a big sports weekend in Sheridan County and not just on the high school football fields…it’s also going on at the Sheridan County Fairgrounds

Today, tomorrow and Sunday, Sheridan College hosts the Pat Hamilton Memorial Rodeo.

This is stop number 3 of 10 in the college rodeo central rocky mountain region.

Half of the season takes place in the fall, the other half in the spring.

Points earned during the fall carry over the winter break, as cowboys and cowgirls try to qualify for the college national finals rodeo, next June in Casper.

Today’s schedule has the slack round starting at noon, and the performance at 6pm.

Tomorrow’s slack is at 9am and then another performance at 6pm.

Sunday’s short-round starts at 10am.

In the Central Rocky Mountain Region standings through 2 rodeos, Wyatt Phelps of Sheridan College leads the bull riding and Nathan Ruth is 2nd in the tie down roping.

Sheridan Bronc Football: The 2nd half of the 2022 high school football season for the Sheridan County teams starts today.

The big one has the undefeated defending champ Sheridan Broncs hosting the undefeated Cheyenne East Thunderbirds, who is the only team that beat Sheridan last year.

Last week the Broncs were able to withstand Thunder Basin who still has the #1 offense in the state class 4A

Cheyenne East has the #2 offense in the state in class 4A, boasting the 3rd best rushing attack and the 2nd best passing game.

Sheridan Coach Jeff Mowry attributes that to the fact that the Thunderbirds are fast and use a no-huddle offense, which is difficult to imitate in practice.

Jeff Mowry

“It’s not easy to take our sophomores and juniors and put them in a position to try to act like the #1 team in the state in 4A with that kind of speed, and so what we’ve done as best as we can we’ve tried to create chaos on our defense so that they have to communicate and they have to be aware of what’s going on in all that chaos, and I think we’ve done a good job and so our guys have to go out there and trust that we’re going to put them in a good position and get lined up and play football.”

There hasn’t been much talk about East’s defense this season.

For the most part they’ve done well at creating turnovers, and they’re good up front, as they have the 3rd best rushing defense.

Perhaps their achilles heel is they have the worst pass defense in 4A.

Mowry says the Thunderbird defense hasn’t been challenged too much, because the offense has done their thing many times, and that takes some of the pressure off the defense as a result.

Jeff Mowry

“Defensively they’re very sound, they don’t give up very many points. 42 to Thunder Basin is the exception, everything else has been low scoring. They put people away, they get up early, and they roll and their defense gets the ball back to their offense. Defensively, pretty traditional defense for them. Similar lineups in years past. They’re a very aggressive defense, they have some quick defensive linemen, that have caused people issues and then they’re linebackers play downhill and play fast and they’re good tacklers.”

While there’s been some concern regarding the Broncs and their performance in the 4th quarter…especially in the last 2 games…Mowry says that’s an area that East doesn’t have much experience in this season…and that could be the deciding factor in tonight’s game.

Jeff Mowry

“With the exception of the Thunder Basin game, where they win 52-to-42, and they led the whole time. They finished with a 10-point margin, but they led the whole game. They really haven’t been in a battle for 4 quarters, and so I’d really like to see how we respond in a tight game in the 4th quarter, but I’d also like to see how they respond in a tight game in the 4th quarter, and hopefully we have that opportunity.”

We will have the game live for you beginning with the pre-game show at 5:30pm, on AM 1410 KWYO and 106.9 FM plus our live video web stream at sheridanmedia.com.
