Weekend Sports Recap: September 16-18, 2022

Sheridan HS Football – The Sheridan Broncs made the long road trip to Rock Springs this past Friday, for a rematch of last year’s state championship game.
The Broncs got on the board when the Rock Springs punter accidentally kicked the ball into his own team-mate, and Sheridan would recover in the end zone to make it 6-0.
Just before halftime, Rock Springs would score and for the first time this season, Sheridan was trailing 7-6, but that situation lasted 14 seconds as Derrick Berritini returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards, to put the Broncs ahead 12-7 going into the locker room.
In the second half, Sheridan would pull away, but Rock Springs would not go down quietly, however the Broncs built themselves enough cushion room and they would prevail 39-28 to move to 4-0 on the season.
Sheridan is home this Friday against Thunder Basin.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm.
Tongue River and Big Horn Football – Tongue River and Big Horn were victorious in their road games in the 2A East.
TR prevailed at Upton-Sundance 20-8, to move their record to 3-0 on the season, while Big Horn ruined Glenrock’s homecoming to the tune of 49-0, to improve their record to 2-1.
TR is home this Friday vs. Newcastle, while BH is home on Friday vs. Torrington.
Both of those games are scheduled to kickoff at 6pm.
Volleyball – The Sheridan Lady Bronc volleyball team dropped both of their matches this weekend against the Gillette teams.
On Friday, they lost at Thunder Basin 3-0, and then on Saturday they lost 3-1 at home vs. Campbell County.
The Lady Broncs are 5-11 on the season with an 0-3 record in the 4A East.
The team will compete this Friday and Saturday at the Casper Invitational.
The defending 2A champs from Big Horn had a good weekend as they won on Friday at home vs. Wright 3-0, and then Saturday they visited 3A thermopolis, and picked up another 3-0 win.
The Lady Rams are 17-3 on the season with a 1-0 record in the 2A Northeast.
BH is scheduled to play Thursday at Tongue River, and then Friday and Saturday at the Casper Invitational.
Tongue River dropped it’s only game of the weekend, as they lost 3-0 at 1A Burlington.
The Lady Eagles are 10-6-2 on the season.
TR has a pair of home games scheduled for this week.
On Thursday they play home against rival Big Horn, and then Friday at home vs. Sundance.
Arvada-Clearmont lost both of their games this past weekend against 1A Northeast opponents.
On Friday the Lady Panthers lost at defending 1A state Champ Kaycee 3-0, and then on Saturday they lost 3-0 at home vs. Hulett.
A-C is 1-5 on the season with a 1-3 record in the 1A Northeast.
They have a pair of home games this Saturday vs. Rock River and Ten Sleep.
State Golf – The Wyoming High School golf season concluded this past weekend.
At the 4A State meet in Rock Springs, the Sheridan girls brought home the state runner-up trophy.
For the 2nd time in 3 years Senior Samantha Spielman is the 4A girls individual state champ, winning by 4 strokes.
The Sheridan boys placed 6th at the state meet.
Brock Ownings finished tied for 1st, but lost in a playoff.
At the 2A State Meet in Wright, Braxton Tremain of Tongue River finished in 4th place, to help the TR boys to a 4th place finish.
Anna Keller was 3rd for the girls to help her team win the 3rd place trophy.
Regional Tennis – Regional tennis was this past weekend in Powell, but not all the championship and 3rd place matches were played because of the weather.
As a result, if a match was rained out, whoever won the head-to-head meeting during the regular season was declared the winner.
The Sheridan boys placed 3rd overall.
Cael Hamrick and Huib Verbeek are the regional champs in boys #1 doubles.
The Sheridan girls came in 2nd place.
Mia Rabon and Alli Ligocki are regional champs in girls #1 doubles…while May Lason and Avery Quarteman are regional champs in girls #3 doubles.
The state meet is this Thursday thru Saturday at Gillette.
Cross Country – Sheridan hosted the Michelle Ludwig Invitational at Black Tooth Park back on Friday.
Bronc Senior Austin Akers won the boys race with a time of 15 minutes 57.29 seconds.
The Sheridan boys as a team would place 2nd, missing Natrona by 4 points.
Tongue River senior Al Spotted with 5th with a time of 16:31.01.
For the girls, Alyssa Fehlauer and Abby Newton of Sheridan finished 6th and 8th respectively, to help the Lady Broncs to a 3rd place finish.
Sheridan will next race on Friday at Rapid City, while Big Horn and Tongue River are scheduled to dual each other on Thursday.
Swimming – The Sheridan girls swim team dropped their home opener in a dual vs. Kelly Walsh.
This Friday is the Sheridan Pre-Invite beginning at 4pm, and then the Sheridan Invitational is Saturday beginning at 9am.
University of Wyoming Football – The Pokes were home on Friday night against Air Force and they were victorious 17-14, to start Mountain West Conference Play.
The Falcons had the #1 rushing attack in the country averaging more than 508 yards per game, and the Cowboys held them to only 171 on the ground.
For UW Titus Swen ran for 102 yards and scored what would be the winning touchdown with 6:35 to go.
After that the defense held Air Force to a 3-and-out and the offense would run out the clock from there.
The Cowboys are now 3-1 on the season with a 1-0 record in the Mountain West Conference.
The Pokes are back in action this Saturday at BYU.
Kickoff is scheduled for 8:15pm.
Denver Broncos Football – The Denver Broncos were down 9-6 at the start of the 4th quarter at home against the Houston Texans, but then took over for good to win 16-9, and even their record at 1-1 on the season.
Quarterback Russell Wilson was 14 of 31 passing for 219 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception.
Kicker Brandon Mcmanus contributed with 3 field goals, including 1 from 50 yards out.
The defense came through late forcing 2 turnovers on downs to secure the win.
Denver’s next game is the Sunday night game at home vs. the San Francisco 49ers.
Colorado Rockies Baseball – The Colorado Rockies won 2 of 3 games this past weekend in Chicago against the Cubs.
On Friday, the Rockies lost 2-1, then won on Saturday 3-1 and won again on Sunday 4-3.
Colorado is 64-82 on the season, and are last in the National League West.
They trail the first place LA Dodgers by 37 games, but they are only 4 games behind Arizona for 4th place.
This week are the last home games of the season for the Rocks.
It starts with a 4-game series with the San Francisco Giants.
The first pitch tonight is scheduled for 6:40pm.
After those 4 games, the home schedule concludes with a 3-game series with the San Diego Padres.
Sheridan Hawks Junior Hockey – The Sheridan Hawks dropped both home games this past weekend against Butte.
Sheridan lost Friday 5-2 and then lost on Saturday 5-4 in overtime.
The Hawks are 1-3 on the season, and will be back in action this weekend with a 2-game series at Helena, Montana.
