Graveside funeral services for Peto Meike Jr. 92-year-old lifetime Johnson County Rancher, who passed away Sunday at the Amie Holt Care Center in Buffalo, will be held Wednesday, October 7th at 11:00 a.m. in Willow Grove Cemetery with Bob Ruby officiating. Donations in Peter’s memory may be made to the Meike Bunkhouse at P.O. Box 372 in Kaycee, Wyoming 82639.  A reception will follow the funeral at the American Legion in Buffalo. Peter Emil Meike Jr. was born on January 8, 1934, in Buffalo, Wyoming to Peter and Naomi Meike.  He went to elementary and middle school at the Sussex School. He went to high school in Buffalo and graduated from Johnson County High School with the class of 1951.  He joined the U.S. Army in 1952 and served at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.  Following an honorable discharge, he returned to Kaycee where he worked the family ranch with his brother Don for the rest of his life. He dedicated his life to the ranch, raising livestock, and his family. He had been a resident of the Amie Holt Care Center for the past two years.

Peto was a member of the Wyoming Stockgrowers and Woolgrowers Association, and the Powder River Conservation District, where he served for 40 years giving four decades of his time, knowledge, experience and heart to the people and the land of our community. He was a member of the 4-H and FFA, the American Sheep Industry, and the Wyoming Stock Dog Association and trained Border Collies. He attended the International Sheep Dog Trials in Chatsworth, Scotland.

Peto and his brother Don were very active contributors to Ag in the classroom and worked tirelessly toward the promotion and improvement of agriculture in Wyoming.

A favorite quote of Peto’s was “Don’t go away mad, just go away”.  He was known for a tremendously dry sense of humor and was incredibly and humbly intelligent. He is survived by one sister Emma Koch of Sussex; two brothers-in-law, Jerry Keeler of Newcastle, Wyoming and Neil Wolcott of Kaufman, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother.
