Florence Black
Florence Evelyn (Baas) Black died March 16, 2026. She was born on February 29, 1928, in Sheridan, Wyoming. Her parents were Neal and Ella Baas. She attended grades 1-12 in Sheridan, graduating in 1946 from Sheridan High School. She attended Parks School of Business in Denver, Colorado and graduated with a secretarial degree. She worked in Denver for a couple of years and then moved to Casper, Wyoming, and was employed at the Ohio Oil Company as a geological secretary for eight years. While in Casper, she met and married Phillip Sellery. They had three children: Lindsay, Craig and Dudley. In 1960, they moved to Costa Mesa, California and later divorced. She and the three children moved back to Sheridan in 1968.
In 1972, she met and married Wally Black. Evelyn worked for numerous attorneys in Sheridan, and finally ended her career after working at The Sheridan County Court (now called Circuit Court). Evelyn was active with the Creative Fiber Guild, she was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, sang in the church choir for many years, and was involved in many volunteer activities with the church, such as prayer shawl committee, lunch together, sewing and quilting. She also was coordinator for lunches at the church for funerals for several years.
Evelyn retired in 1989. After retiring, she and her husband, Wally, enjoyed traveling in their RV, spending many winters in Arizona and California. They loved camping, gardening, square dancing and golf.
Her husband, Wally passed away in 2018, and in 2021, Evelyn moved to Loveland, Colorado to be near her daughter, Lindsay. She resided at Good Samaritan Society for years, where she made many new friends. She lived there until her death.
Evelyn is survived by Lindsay (Jack) Cantley, Craig (Gina) Sellery, Dudley (Monica) Sellery, a stepdaughter, Cathy Black (Rick) Knuckles, and a stepson, David Black. There are six grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren, a niece, Diana (Baas) Stamper, and a nephew Dan Baas, a nephew Karl Sellery, and 3 cousins: Betty Sieler, David Baas, Bill Baas.
Memorials may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church or to Sheridan Senior Citizens.
A Celebration of Evie’s Life will be held on Friday, July 17, 2026, at 11:00 AM, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, with a reception to immediately follow.
Inurnment will take place next to her Husband, Wallace Black in the Elk’s Section of the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.
