Arvid Victor Luhman (Sheridan, WY, formerly Howard Lake, MN) passed away at the age of 88 on Saturday, February 8, 2025, in the loving arms of his family after a courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis and pneumonia.

Arvid was born on November 15, 1936, in Cokato, MN, to Alfred and Clara (Klammer) Luhman, the youngest of seven children. He grew up on the family homestead in Middleville Township, was baptized and confirmed in St. James Lutheran Church, and attended the parochial school through 8th grade. He actively served the church throughout his life on various boards. He graduated from Howard Lake High School in 1955, where his love of football began. After high school, Arvid attended the University of Minnesota School of Agriculture (1956-1957). He then joined the Army, was stationed in West Germany, and served as a tank mechanic.

Once he returned to the United States, one of his army buddies set him up on a blind date, introducing him to the love of his life, Violet Richmond. Arvid and Vi were married on June 11, 1960. Their marriage was blessed with two children, Susan Marie (1961) and Gregory Alan (1964).

Over the course of his life, Arvid actively managed the family farm with his brother, raising dairy cattle and hogs. He was gifted at fixing all things mechanical and non-mechanical. Arvid was a gentle soul, a great carpenter, and a gardener. Over the years, he developed excellent cooking skills—his ribs, chicken wings, green bean casserole, and carrot cake with maple frosting were favorites of family and friends. Vi and Arvid hosted two AFS students, Paula Wortmann from the Netherlands in 1976-77 and Merilyn Glover from Australia in 1980-81. Their generosity and open-hearted welcoming of people into their home expanded Vi and Arvid’s circle of “family” and friends and led to travels to South Africa, the Panama Canal, Germany, and the Netherlands.

Arvid was an excellent father and role model with a great sense of humor and a calm, relaxed demeanor with a good nose for fun. He will be deeply missed by all who had the good fortune of knowing him.

Arvid is survived by his wife of 64 years, Violet; his daughter Susan (Stefan) Michael; son Gregory (Shelley Meier); grandsons Sheehan Michael (Maura Kenny), Cooper Luhman (Justin Thrasher), Noah Luhman (Ace Rand), Austin Meier (Kristina & family), and Sam Bisso; as well as a host of family and friends.

A funeral service will take place at 2:00 PM at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1300 West 5th Street, Sheridan, WY, on Sunday, February 16. A reception will follow.

If you are unable to attend the service, it will be live-streamed at the following link:

Vi, I am so sorry for your loss of Arvid. His hee-haw for mule kicks at BOOM class always brightened up our exercise time. I hope you are feeling God’s peace at this time, and doing as well as you can.
