James Richard Petrie, 87, passed away on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at the Sheridan, WY VA Mountain View Living Center with his wife by his side.

Dick Petrie was born in Greeley, Colorado to Jacob and Florence (Trimble) Petrie on July 7, 1936, and passed away on June 1, 2024, in Sheridan, Wyoming. In the 1940s the family moved to Denver, Colorado. Dick married Betty Duncan in 1957, and they had three children, Sherri, Lauri, and David. Dick joined the Army in 1959 and was stationed in Japan, where Lauri and David were born. After his service in the military, the family returned to Denver. He then joined Pipefitter’s Local 208 in Denver in 1963. Dick and Betty divorced in 1972. In 1981, he married Karylyn Marchetti and her three children. Dick and Karylyn moved to Story, Wyoming in October 1991. Dick retired in 1998, after serving 35 years as a Union Pipefitter. Dick recently received his 60-year Union membership pin.

Dick enjoyed a variety of hobbies in retirement. From blacksmithing, tinkering with Jeeps, crafting jewelry, to building birdhouses, he was always finding ways to create. Dick enjoyed spending time at happy hour with the Dead Pecker Society and visiting Hole in the Wall with the group. He was an excellent cook, frequently cooking Sunday dinners. During this, we all enjoyed his one-liners and laughter, such as the “Follow me eyes” joke. Dick and Karylyn loved to travel throughout the US and took seven trips to Ireland during retirement. Most of all Dick loved being around his friends and family and passing on knowledge about all of these many skills.

Dick is survived by his wife, Karylyn, and his children, Lauri (Jon-deceased) Murrow, Waco, Texas; Kary Sharp Laituri, Berthoud, Colorado; Sean Castellano, South Salem, New York; Lori castellano, Bella Vista, Arkansas. Grandchildren, Seth (Angie Oberg) Sharp; Mercedes (Bo) Biteman; Jessika (Bo) Parsons; Jeremy (Kelly) Capansky; Jerusalem (Daniel) Lightfoot; Caitlin Conklin; Luke Murrow; Janesa Murray; Corey (Monica) Castellano. Many great-grandchildren. His brother, LeRoy (Irene) Petrie; niece Kathy (Claude) – deceased) Nightengale and her 3 daughters.

He was preceded in death by his parents, infant daughter Sherri, son David, grandson Lee Murrow, great-granddaughter Meryl Sharp, and his son-in-law Jon Murrow.

Dick donated his body to Bozeman Body Donation. We will have a celebration of Life later this summer. In place of flowers please make donations to Story Woman’s Club, P.O. Box 103, Story, WY 82842, or Brave the Shave, 1950 Far West Drive, Bismarck, North Dakota, 58504, in memory of Meryl Sharp.
