recently learned that my friend and shipmate Scott Timberlake passed away in March 2020.
Scott and I served together aboard the USS Jason (AR-8). When I reported aboard in 1979, fresh out of boot camp, Scott helped me get settled in and learn my way around the ship. He was a mentor and a friend when I was a new sailor.
He taught me a lot, gave me a hard time when I needed it, and helped me figure things out. He also taught me how to play poker, and I’m still pretty good at it. He deserves some of the credit for that.
I remember Scott’s interest in photography and the time I tagged along with him when he went dirt track racing in an old Chevy. Those are memories I’ve never forgotten.
We saw each other again at the Las Vegas reunion about 25 years ago and later connected on social media, but like happens sometimes, we lost touch again. I was sorry to learn of his passing.
When I think back to my time on the Jason, Scott is one of the first people that comes to mind. He took the time to help a young sailor find his way, and I’ve always remembered that.
Fair winds and following seas, Scott.
