Jacob Samuel “Sam” Myers, 33, passed into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Monday, May 1, 2023.

Sam was born in Julesburg, CO on April 12, 1990. He was very active and loved life. In 2001, he moved with his family to Japan as Christian missionaries. He attended Japanese elementary school, learning the language and the culture. He enjoyed sports, hiking, playing the guitar, and spending time with his family.

While young, Sam’s brain developed cavernous hemangiomas. One grew so large, Sam needed to undergo extensive brain surgery to remove it in 2009. The surgery was successful but left him partially paralyzed on his left side. Most people who know Sam recognize him as the tall guy who walks all over town with a cane. Even so, he still took time to talk to people, encouraging them, and being friends with them.

Sam graduated from the University of Wyoming with a degree in psychology. He wanted to use this to help people, particularly people with disabilities. Unfortunately, more surgeries prevented him from fulfilling this desire. Instead, he used his knowledge and experience to reach out to people regardless of their condition.

His most recent passion was his dog, Sheldon, a Chihuahua mix. Sam loved Sheldon a lot! People would see them walking all over town.

Sam’s greatest accomplishment was hiking part of the Mont Blanc trail in Europe. He and a friend hiked the parts in France, Switzerland, and Italy. Sam’s goal was to be an example for those with disabilities; not to let their disability limit them. It was the most memorable experience of his life.

Sam is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents. He is survived by his parents, Rich & Carol Myers, sisters Heidi (and her family) and Sarah, and extended family.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2023, at 11:00 am at the Cornerstone Church with Pastor Cody Haar and Pastor Greg Greene officiating. A reception will follow at the church.

Online condolences may be written at www.kanefuneral.com. Kane Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.

He would always say hi to me when I would see him out walking. I would think, I was tough until I saw Sam. That guy was tough. God bless.

Sam’s smile was contagious and always warmed our hearts. Many Y staff and members kept track of Sam over the years and always enjoyed visiting with him. We loved hearing about his hiking experiences and were thankful for his inspiration in all aspects of life.

My heart aches, as I think of Sam, but rejoices knowing he is pain free and has a healed body in the presence of our LORD. Such a sweet young man with a winning smile. I admire him for his courage as he faced his health issues. Such an inspiration to all who knew him. You are loved, Carol, Rich and family, you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Reflecting on how Rich and Carol might be feeling at this time: My wife died when our two kids were fairly young (jr. high and elementary school). It wasn’t easy for me to work and raise them alone, but you do your best. Then one day, they grew up and left. Yes, there was a sense of empty-nest syndrome, but also a sense of peace that I had done the task I had been given and that now it was over. They were always in God’s hands, but now even more so. Sam was a good guy and I have fond memories of him on the third floor in the fellowship room after church.

Sweet Sam, I hadn’t seen you in a long time but I always loved helping you at the bank. I remember being so impressed and inspired when you told me about how you hiked all over Europe. The world is a better place for your presence in it, and you will be missed.

It’s been my honor and delight to be Sam’s friend. He’s an inspiration for many who deal with huge life challenges, and a steadfast, honest, and patient teacher for those of us who seek to understand what life is like for those who are coping with those big challenges. Rest well, my friend.
