Thomas Leroy “Tom” Mefford
In Loving Memory – Thomas Leroy “Tom” Mefford passed away peacefully in his home in Hardin MT at the age of 79 with his wife Cheryl by his side.
He was born on February 22, 1947, in Sheridan WY to Dorothy (Shreve) Mefford Benedict and Jim Benedict. Tom grew up with Harry Mefford on many ranches throughout Wyoming. As a young man Tom was always fixing something or making go-carts with his brother Dick Mefford.
As a proud U.S. Air Force Veteran, Tom served his country with honor as a Staff Sergeant Aircraft Maintenances Technician during the Vietnam War (1967-1971). When asked where he was in Vietnam, he would smile and say everywhere there was an airplane landing strip, at times from Thailand to Vung Tau. From this time working with aircraft Tom found a love for flying and enjoyed his Piper Arrow airplane. An avid aviator, he enjoyed piloting his own aircraft, and was a talented musician who loved playing guitar and singing for family and friends.
After his military service he pursued his lifelong passion for engineering and maintenance, dedication 40 years to the mining industry. Tom maintained and repaired draglines across the United States and abroad, earning the respect of colleagues who regarded him as an industry expert.
He had another challenge in 1994. He met Cheryl, and together they made many travels working in the mining industry and meeting many people. In retirement, he enjoyed the quieter pleasures of country life, while often working with his equipment in the hayfield. He always said a coat of paint on the equipment will bring you more money. Always taking pride in his equipment, the cleaner he could keep it the happier he was. For 33 years, Tom especially enjoyed tending his garden and sharing peaceful days with his beloved wife Cheryl.
Tom is survived by his wife of 25 years Cheryl Salzer; his daughter Ashley (Jim) Inguagiato of Erie, CO; his brother Gary (Sara) Mefford of Sheridan, WY; his grandchildren Ava and Jack; and his niece Londyn. He is preceded in death by his parents Jim Benedict, Dorothy and Harry Mefford, and brother Richard “Dick” Mefford.
Military funeral honors will be held at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD.
