A lecture on Nate Champion and the Johnson County Cattle War will be presented next month in Buffalo.

Author and Western Historian Mark Warren, who wrote “Nate Champion and the Johnson County Cattle War, 1892” will be speaking at various venues throughout the state during the month of September, including a stop at the Johnson County Library on September 20.

According to a flier from the Johnson County Historical Society, Warren’s years of research reveal why Western scholars consider Nate Champion to be an unsung hero in American history.

The lecture will reveal one of America’s most egregious acts of insurrection and how Champion unknowingly prevented the crime of the century and became a martyr to the common laborer.

Warren will also delve into how the government’s free-range policy inspired chaos and lawlessness among ranchers of the West.

The lecture will be presented on Friday, September 20 at 6:30 p.m. in the Twing Room at the Johnson County Library.
