WYO Rodeo Board of Directors member Dr. Sarah Schreiber has been caring for the animal athletes of the Sheridan WYO Rodeo for 25 years. A dedicated veterinarian, Schreiber — along with a skilled team — takes the responsibility of maintaining the health and well-being of the rodeo stock seriously.

Throughout the event, a team of caretakers, veterinarians, and vet assistants is constantly monitoring the animals. According to WYO Rodeo President Hayden Heaphy, early rodeos often used wild horses rounded up to test a cowboy’s grit. Today, the animals seen in Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) events are genetically bred, highly trained, and receive top-tier care, much like professional athletes.

Despite these efforts, misconceptions about rodeo stock persist. When asked which one she’d most like to dispel, Dr. Schreiber didn’t hesitate.
