On November 5, The Sheridan Public Arts Committee (SPAC) announced that they are inviting the community to a special public reception on Saturday, November 7, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. at the Museum of the Bighorns to meet Professor Littleto Alston, the selected artist for the Iron Riders Memorial Project.

The Iron Riders Memorial Project will honor the remarkable history and legacy of the 25th Infantry Bicycle Corps, a group of African American soldiers who, in 1897, undertook an extraordinary 1,900-mile bicycle expedition from Fort Missoula, Montana, to St. Louis, Missouri. Their historic journey took them through the Sheridan area and demonstrated incredible endurance, innovation, and determination.

Following a competitive selection process that drew 36 artist applications, SPAC selected Professor Alston to bring this important story to life through a permanent public artwork in Sheridan.

During the reception, Professor Alston will share insights into his vision for the memorial and discuss the inspiration behind his design. Community members will have the opportunity to visit with the artist and SPAC Committee members, ask questions, and learn more about the project and its next steps.

The Iron Riders Memorial Project represents an exciting opportunity to recognize an important chapter of American history while continuing to enrich Sheridan’s public art collection. As the project moves forward, SPAC looks forward to engaging the community in bringing this meaningful memorial to life.

The reception is free and open to the public. All are encouraged to attend and be part of the conversation.

The Sheridan Public Arts Committee works to enhance the cultural landscape of Sheridan through the acquisition, exhibition, and stewardship of public art. With more than 100 works throughout the community, Sheridan’s public art collection celebrates creativity, history, and the unique character of the region.
