Johnson County Commission Chair Bill Novotny appeared on Sheridan Media’s Pulse to report that according to unofficial county returns, county voters approved Kaycee’s $280,000 road and drainage measure, and Buffalo’s $5.7 million North Burritt Avenue measure to be paid by a 1% tax.

Novotny said he is happy for the mayor of Kaycee as Johnson County voters approved the town’s proposal to cover the planning, engineering and construction to improve the driving surface and drainage on Old Barnum Road and Barber Street from Nolan Avenue to Park Avenue.

Buffalo’s included the planning, engineering, and reconstruction of North Burritt from Fort Street to Watkins Avenue, including paving, curb and gutter, sidewalks, water main and sewer main. Novotny said without this voter approval, Buffalo may have been forced to raise the cost of certain services to cover the expense.

Novotny said going forward, a priority for the county will be finding funding for safety upgrades along 5 miles of Rock Creek Road and Johnson Creek Road as voters did not approve funding that project through the 1% tax.

The two approved projects will share a single 1% sales and use tax countywide that will go into effect beginning April 2027. Collections of those taxes will sunset once the tax raises the amount authorized by voters for the two projects.
