Drought contributed to low mosquito populations overall, but district trapping and testing detected mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus within Sheridan County.

Sheridan County Weed and Pest Control District Supervisor Walk Billings said the virus was detected in an isolated group of mosquitoes and although drought conditions cut down the population of other species, the carrier species (culex tarsalis) was not affected by the lack of water this year.

Billings said crews responded quickly, and subsequent testing found no additional positive populations.
