Little Athletes at the YMCA

The Sheridan County YMCA has a program that introduces the littlest of athletes to team play and engaging in different sports.

A month-by-month program, Little Athletes gives parents an opportunity to introduce their three-year-old children to different sports and teach them the bare basics of team play, good sportsmanship and the benefits of athletics.

While appearing on Sheridan Media’s Pulse, Executive Director Liz Cassiday said basketball will wrap up for October and November will introduce kids to soccer.

According to the National Library of Medicine, by the time children are three to five years old, most have learned the basic skills needed to play simple sports, such as running, catching and throwing. To play organized sports, kids need to learn how to put these skills together (for example, how to run and throw at the same time), which usually doesn’t happen until age six.

Little Athletes gives children a chance to practice these skills while having fun with teammates and under close supervision. To learn these different skills, children need to play different sports.

As Sheridan heads into the winter season, December will feature t-ball inside to develop, along with other skills, hand-eye coordination.
