District Battled Grasshopper Outbreak Along Boarder
The 2026 grasshopper season through the majority of Sheridan County was typical, but along the shared border with Johnson County the Sheridan County Weed and Pest Control District had to focus efforts to bring their numbers down.
Supervisor Walker Billings discussed the district’s response on Sheridan Media’s Pulse.

Billings and his team treated nearly 60,000 acres belonging to 13 landowners during the concentrated grasshopper outbreak.

Treatment for grasshoppers must be performed early in the spring, taking place prior to their third molt. Utilizing techniques developed by the University of Wyoming, the district reduced grasshopper densities of 50 to 75 (100 in some cases) per square yard to around five, according to Billings. The treatment works on younger grasshoppers and does not affect pollinators.
