SCLT to Host Walking Tour of Sheridan Railroad Historic District

On Saturday, May 16, beginning at 1 p.m. The Sheridan Community Land Trust (SCLT) is inviting the community to step into the past with a new Saturday SCLT Explore History program: a guided walking tour of the Sheridan Railroad Historic District.

Led by SCLT History Program Manager Kevin Knapp, this inaugural tour will highlight the people, industries, and landmarks that helped shape Sheridan into a vital rail hub of the American West.

The tour will begin at Grinnell Plaza, just outside Sheridan City Hall. From there, participants will walk approximately ¾ mile through the historic district, primarily on sidewalks and paved surfaces, while learning about early railroad development, local entrepreneurs, and the lasting impact of rail transportation on the community. The tour will last between 45 minutes and an hour. There will be places to sit and rest along the tour.

“Sheridan exists the way it does because of the railroad, and this stretch of Broadway holds a surprising amount of that history in just a few blocks,” SCLT History Program Manager Kevin Knapp said of what you can expect on the tour. “What we’re doing on the tour is helping people see the stories of founding families, entrepreneurs, and common people that are still right there in front of them.”

The program is free and open to the public, though sign-ups are appreciated. Participants are encouraged to dress for the weather, wear comfortable walking shoes, and bring water if they’d like.

SCLT is deeply grateful to Mickey Douglas and Jean Harm for the many hours of volunteer research that helped bring this walking tour to life.
