Abandoned, But Not Forgotten: Fort Phil Kearny’s Cemetery
On September 2nd at 6:00 p.m., those interested in the history around Fort Phil Kearny are invited to join Site Superintendent Sharie Shada for a presentation and a hike to the Fort Cemetery.
Shada talks about his year’s hike.
The cemetery was one of the first things laid out at the new fort in 1866, as they knew it would be needed. Quartermaster Warren compiled a description, ground plan, grave inventory and a sketch of the proposed cemetery, including a monument, which was never built.
At one time there were over 100 people, soldiers and civilians, buried in the cemetery, most of the casualties were from the Fetterman Battle.
All are welcome, and regular state historic site fees apply, $4 for adults and children are free.

Near the end of the month the Fort will hold their annual Full Moon Fort event. September 25 & 26th.
