WHP: Sturgis and Motorcycle Safety

The Wyoming Highway Patrol increased patrols and presence in northeast Wyoming surrounding the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota. 

According to the organizers of the rally, there is no exact total count for individual people, as organizers track vehicle traffic instead. But the South Dakota Department of Transportation recorded 448,166 entering vehicles for the 2026 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. This is a drop of roughly over 16% compared to the 2025 anniversary rally (which saw 537,459 vehicles).

WHP Lieutenant Louis Tegdesch said several troopers traveled to the Sundance area to assist with the influx of motorcycles passing through the region. The rally brings riders from across the country through Wyoming and surrounding states, creating additional traffic and safety concerns on area highways. 

Although the Sturgis rally is done for the year, Tegdesh reminded motorists to “check twice and save a life” while driving as motorcycle traffic remains prevalent in the region.

Tegdesch also reminded motorcycle riders to be cautious during the dawn to dusk hours.
