Michael Stein

Michael was born on August 30, 1972, in Sheridan, Wyoming, to John Robert Stein and Patti Lunbeck. He grew up with a strong sense of independence and a deep appreciation for the outdoors, traits that would define much of his life.

Michael dedicated 10 years of service to the Story Volunteer Fire Department, where he was known for his commitment and willingness to show up when others needed him most. Over the years, he worked a variety of jobs, including as a hotshot driver, a security officer, and a taxi driver in Deadwood, South Dakota. Wherever he went, he brought a straightforward attitude, a sharp sense of humor, and a knack for making life a little more interesting.

In 1998, Michael married Chasity McKinney, and together they welcomed their daughter, Madison Rose Marie Stein/Anderson. He later welcomed his son, Corey Hansford, born August 10, 2000. His children were an important part of his life, and he carried pride in them wherever he went.

Michael found his greatest joy outdoors. He loved camping, snowmobiling, hiking, motorcycling, and prospecting. He had a spirit for adventure and a love for what he often called “all-around fuckery,” bringing laughter and unpredictability to those who knew him best. He lived life on his own terms, unapologetically and fully.

He is survived by his mother, Patti Lunbeck; his brother, Soren; his daughter, Madison; his son, Corey; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, John Robert Stein; his grandparents, Jean and George Lunbeck; and his stepfather, Bill Olesen.

A Public Viewing will take place at Champion Kane Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, from 2:00 PM – 4PM.

Interment will be held in the Story Cemetery officiated by Kim Fuka, on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at 11:00 AM followed by a Reception held at the Story Women’s Club.

Michael will be remembered for his resilience, his humor, his love of the outdoors, and the stories—many unforgettable—that he leaves behind.
