Executive Director of the Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter AJ Evans and owner and operator of the Unleashed Foundation, Marian Eccles stopped by Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse to share some tips for keeping your furry family members nice and warm this coming winter season.
According to Eccles, even if you have a dog house, creating a windbreak is the first step to keeping your outside animals warm.

Insulating dog houses with hay or straw as opposed to blankets will help to prevent moisture build-up and freezing.
Eccles also suggested preparing a heated water bowl or if one owns many dogs, heated buckets to ensure dogs have access to clean water throughout the day.
The winter weather can be dangerous for many dog breeds. Eccles suggested purchasing a sweater or a coat for the smaller breeds to help them endure colder weather conditions.
Many other breeds can not only endure the colder winter weather, but enjoy time playing in the snow and being outside when most of us would run to the house. But every animal has limits, if the temperature becomes too cold, Eccles suggests keeping even the outside dogs in a garage, porch or mudroom. If the dog is not used to being indoors, a kennel placed in the home may be the best option.

Eccles reminds the public that kenneled dogs can be left overnight but should be checked on and let out to the yard every four to five hours during the day.
