Perceived Law Enforcement Impersonator Was The Real Deal

Published

on

Earlier this week it was reported that a motorist was pulled over by what was believed to be a man impersonating a law enforcement officer.

The Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office says it turns out the person was an off-duty Sheriff’s deputy and had pulled the driver over for a perceived violation of Wyoming State Statute.

The Sheriff’s Office says as of this time there is no known concern to the public from a possible law enforcement impersonator in the Sheridan County area.

Pulling someone over in your personal vehicle while off duty ? That’s a great look for the Sheriff.

So here is the question; can/should an off duty officer have the ability to stop anyone with unconventional methods? Seems like a bad idea. Just instilling more distrust. Where is the original reporting?

I am a supporter of all first responders…LEO, military, FD, etc., but in my opinion, they should not. With the rise in road rage incidents, it may provoke a violent response from someone, and where would the blame lie? They should be under the same limitations as non-LEOs when off-duty. Safer for them, and may help some of them feel more empathy for those they serve. As well, it opens the door for impersonators, since citizens will not know who is legit.
