cvannoyThe Clear Creek FFA Alumni and the ACHS after Prom Committee hosted an evening with John Rotellini, well-known magician, on Saturday, March 25. Rotellini, who was born and raised in Sheridan, performed many interesting magical feats for all to enjoy. Along with AJ Longhurst, Rotellini has performed at the WYO in Sheridan several times.
In a pre-show interview with Sheridan Media, Rotellini said that he graduated from Sheridan High School, Sheridan College and the University of Wyoming. He talked about Sheridan and how he got his start doing magic.
He added that Jay Owenhouse would have elaborate sets for his magic show.
He said later in high school he was selected to attend Boys State and found others there who were into card tricks and magic tricks. After Boys State, he went to the Sheridan Library and found many books on magic tricks. Some were some from the Vaudeville days.
He said that at first it was just a hobby, but he began going around the Sheridan area and Wyoming doing magic. Today he travels the world, doing big prop magic, like doing helicopters disappear, as well as interactive magic that doesn’t need big props. Last year he said he traveled in over 20 countries and has performed in over 150 events. He now lives in Las Vegas but said the comes home to Sheridan every couple of months.
“Sheridan is a lovely community and a lot different than where I call home in Las Vegas. It is a nice balance to things,” Rotellini said.
He said that doing stuff in small towns was more ‘low-key’, and more like what he used to for family and friends.
He added this about his career in magic, and the help he had to realize his dream.
Around 40 people attended the event, and later in the evening Rotellini gave his show at the after-prom party.
His show consisted mainly of mind-reading skills, and audience members participated in the show. In one segment, Rotellini drew a picture on a white board, and although the participating audience member did not see the picture, the one he drew was nearly identical.
In another segment, the audience member was asked to set his analog watch, and, even blindfolded, Rotellini set his watch at the exact same time.
He correctly named a pet name that a husband called his wife, and he asked if she had had a high school crush, and he correctly named her crush, who is now her husband.
He also knew what a word was from a magazine that one participant opened at random.
There were oohs and aahs from the audience, and Rotellini received a standing ovation after the show.
There was a cash bar with beer and wine from Clear Creek Stop, as well as light snacks. Proceeds from the show went to the Clear Creek FFA Alumni programs and the scholarship fund, and donations were accepted.
