An experienced recreationalist from Buffalo, New York is recovering at a hospital in Billings, after being severely mauled by a grizzly bear in northwest Wyoming.
In a media release from the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, the incident happened on Monday (June 27th), near Francs Peak west of Meeteetse.
A Department spokes-person says based on the initial investigation, it may have been a surprise encounter between the 68-year old man and the bear, and it may have happened at close range, thus the victim didn’t have enough time to deploy the bear spray that he was carrying.
Game and Fish is not planning any kind of management action, but will continue to monitor bear activity in the area and will make management decisions in the best interest of public safety.

I think that we need to understand that humans have entroched on wildlife territory. And then the animals get punished because of our stupidity. I was born and raised on a farm and I know that animals will defend themselves and their young. Something humans haven’t learned yet.
