Change of Plea Hearing Held for Man Charged With Several Felonies

On January 27 of this year, Rodney Cabrera was arrested and charged with six crimes for breaking into Fremont Toyota in Sheridan on January 16 and stealing a firearm, tools and a Toyota 4-Runner. The 4-Runner, estimated to be worth $45,000, was later recovered in a parking lot in Casper. Cabrera was arrested on the 27th when Sheridan Police responded to a report of an individual attempting to break into a cargo trailer.

Cabrera, pursuant to terms of a plea agreement reached with the State, entered pleas of “no contest” to four of the six charges at a hearing Tuesday in District Court. Per terms of the plea deal, the State is recommending a sentence of 5 to 7 years in prison for each of two counts of felony burglary, 5 to 7 years for a charge of felony theft, and 120 days in jail for a misdemeanor interference with a peace officer charge. All of the sentences will run concurrent to the 5 to 7 year sentence for count 1, felony burglary. The State is recommending the Court dismiss a charge of theft and attempted burglary as part of the plea agreement. District Court Judge John Fenn ordered that a presentence investigation be completed and set the date for sentencing for October 14 at 9 am.

A co-defendant in the case, Mackenzie Shores was scheduled to be sentenced Tuesday, but failed to show up for the hearing. Judge Fenn issued a failure to appear bench warrant for her arrest.
