The Sheridan County YMCA has a program to teach teenagers safe weightlifting techniques.

While appearing on Sheridan Media’s Pulse, YMCA Executive Director Liz Cassiday said this month-by-month program teaches the basics of weightlifting as well as proper techniques to help prevent injury and long term negative effects of improper training.

According to the Mayo Clinic, strength training can increase children’s muscle strength, aid in protecting children’s muscles and joints from sports injuries and help children do better in nearly any sport.

The class meets at 4 p.m. for an hour on Mondays and Wednesdays. The instruction will build confidence in young weight trainers and through the safety training, teach safe habits.

The cost for YMCA members is $25, non-members $50. Scholarships are available, inquire at the front desk of the YMCA.
